Richard Holmes

Biography

Richard Holmes began his operatic career at Lake George Opera Festival, where he sang Damis in Kirke Mechem's Tartuffe. His most recent appearance at Lake George was as Papageno in The Magic Flute, one of his most acclaimed and frequently performed roles. He has performed more than 140 operatic and musical theater roles. Among his favorite roles are the comic bel canto baritone roles, such as Figaro in The Barber of Seville, Dandini in La Cenerentola, Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Belcore in L'Elisir D'Amore and the Count in Le Nozze di Figaro. One of Mr. Holmes' specialties is his extensive Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire. He has sung 22 roles in all 13 of the Savoy Operas. Among his most admired performances are Grosvenor in Patience, Despard in Ruddigore, Giuseppe in The Gondoliers and Jack Point in The Yeomen of the Guard. He has sung both the Pirate King and the Major-General in The Pirates of Penzance, Strephon and Mountararat in Iolanthe and Ko-Ko and Pish-Tush in The Mikado. His most acclaimed G&S role is Captain Corcoran in HMS Pinafore, in which he made a highly praised debut with Glimmerglass Opera. As an accomplished concert artist Mr. Holmes has been a soloist with Brooklyn Philharmonic, Lake Placid Sinfonietta, Richmond Symphony, New York Festival of Song, Bronx Arts Ensemble and Canterbury Choral Society. His performances with Maestro Johannes Somary have included the baritone solos of Brahms’ German Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht and Simon in Handel’s Judas Maccabeus. At Cape May Music Festival, he sang an acclaimed performance of Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer, which was later broadcast on National Public Radio. Mr. Holmes is proud to have sung many contemporary operas in addition to his standard repertoire, including the title character of Noye's Fludde, the Teacher in Weill's Der Jasager, Lieutenant Lukash in The Good Soldier Schweik and Charles Gloyd in Moore's Carry Nation. Since singing the title role in Seymour Barab's Phillip Marshall with Center for Contemporary Opera, Mr. Barab has requested him for the premieres of several of his works, most recently for the triumphant cantata, Rest Eternal Grant Us with words by Kurt Vonnegut. This work was recently released by Newport Classics with Mr. Holmes as baritone soloist. Recent engagements for Mr. Holmes have included the role of Ko-Ko in Whitewater Opera's production of The Mikado and the role of George in Natchez Opera Festival's production of She Loves Me. In 1998 Mr. Holmes performed the role of Schaunard in The Opera Company of El Paso's .production of La Bohème and the roles of Sir Joseph Porter and Baron Zeta in Virginia Opera's productions of HMS Pinafore and The Merry Widow. In 1999, he was soloist with Amor Artis Orchestra in Charpentier’s Te Deum and Mozart’s Coronation Mass in Amsterdam and Paris, ending with a triumphantly received performance at Notre-Dame Cathedral. He performed Orlofsky’s Footman in the Metropolitan Opera’s new Comden-Green version of Die Fledermaus and will appear in this role in the Metropolitan’s millenium Gala. In 2000 he debuted as soloist with Dessoff Choirs in Handel's Israel in Egypt at Alice Tully Hall. He returned to Whitewater Opera as Belcore in L'Elisir D'Amore, and sang his first Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Sioux City Symphony. In concert, he sang Jesus and the Bass arias in Bach's St. John Passion with Amor Artis Orchestra and recorded Kurt Weill's Berlin Requiem with Manhattan Chamber Orchestra before embarking on a tour of Spain, singing works by Bach and Charpentier in Madrid and Barcelona. He will sing Johannes Somary's Te Deum at the Vatican in Rome as part of the Millenium Celebrations there. Reviews

Madama Butterfly - Sioux City Symphony
"Richard Holmes was outstanding as Sharpless. He used his large, beautiful voice with great sensitivity to make the Consul a figure of strength as well as sympathy. Projecting easily, his performance was the solidifying factor at the center of the performance." Gretchen Gondek, Arts in Iowa (3/00)

The Barber of Seville - Whitewater Opera Company
"Richard Holmes was at his finest as Figaro. He's a natural comedian with a vibrant stage presence...flawless execution of the opera's many difficult baritone passages [sung] in a strong, rich voice with an impressive range and excellent breath control. He sang with apparent ease, without missing even a fraction of a beat while singing and clowning at the same time." Arts Indiana, Cheryl Gibbs

"Singing, shaving, bouncing, leaping and scheming through it all, drawing all the others' antics together into one brilliantly funny evening at the opera, was Holmes as the barber, Figaro. He wowed the audience immediately with his 'Largo al factotum.' The combination of his distinguished voice and sense of slapstick gathered his audience into the play and exhausted them with delight." Middletown Journal, Susan Svihlik

Don Pasquale - Whitewater Opera Company
"Holmes, as Dr. Malatesta, was a wonder to watch and hear. With the flair of a phenomenal juggler, Holmes tossed off Donizetti's brisk and intricate melodies without a hint of effort." Arts Indiana, Richard Holden

"Some of the most demanding music was sung with flair by Richard Holmes as a thoroughly convincing Malatesta." Opera News, Betty Dietz

Die Fledermaus - Whitewater Opera Company
"Carrying the show: Baritone Richard Holmes as Eisenstein was never at a loss on the stage. His bouncy stage presence carried the opera... . His voice was strong and clear and always carrying easily over the orchestra." Richmond Palladium-Item, R.A. Elder

La Cenerentola - Whitewater Opera Company
"Dandini, sung by Richard Holmes...produced both delightful comical gags in his disguise as the Prince and a warm lyric baritone sound, the highlight of which was his bravura rendition of his first act aria." Middletown Journal-Alison Acord, Cincinnati, OH

The Telephone and Gallantry - Cape May Music Festival
"Menotti's The Telephone and Moore's Gallantry" were sung to a fare-thee-well by soprano Jeanne Ommerle and baritone Richard Holmes, both of whom also acquitted themselves brilliantly as comedians." Newark Star-Ledger, Michael Redmond

"Leading a uniformly excellent cast, Ms. Ommerle and Mr. Holmes were in superb form throughout." New York Times, Bernard Holland

Thérèse and Le Portrait de Manon (Massenet)-Bel Canto Opera
"Richard Holmes sang the baritone role of des Grieux with an attractive, forthright voice. [In Th‚rŠse], Mr. Holmes did admirable work as André‚ the husband." New York Times, Will Crutchfield

Der Jasager (Weill)-Center for Contemporary Opera
"Particularly effective was Richard Holmes as the Teacher, with a sweet baritone, admirably clear diction and an affecting nobility of utterance." New York Times, John Rockwell

H.M.S. Pinafore-New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players
"...Richard Holmes,...plays the Pinafore's careworn captain with proper angst and sings beautifully." New York Daily News, Howard Kissel

H.M.S. Pinafore-Glimmerglass Opera
"Richard Holmes makes a strong Glimmerglass debut as the dapper Captain Corcoran." Schenectady Gazette, Bill Rice

"Captain Corcoran was wonderfully sung by Richard Holmes, a jolly and social climbing but lovable captain." Utica Observer-Dispatch, Jonas Kover

"...Richard Holmes was, vocally and physically, an uncommonly handsome Captain Corcoran." Syracuse Herald-Journal, Earl George

The Golden Apple-Reimann Opera Theatre, NYC
"Easily the most impressive performer was Richard Holmes as a most engaging, very well-vocalized Ulysses." New York Daily News, Bill Zakariasen

The Gondoliers-New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players
"Richard Holmes was effervescent and technically polished as Giuseppe and sang with mellifluous exuberance." New York Magazine, Peter G. Davis

Ruddigore-New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players
"Hearty-baritoned Richard Holmes was a villain one could really dig one's whip into, filling the stage with flair and energy whenever he appeared." The Opera Glass, Iris Bass

Judas Maccabeus - Czech Philharmonic, Prague
"Richard Holmes, as Simon, sang richly, strongly and with an unusual agility for a low male voice." Prague Evening News

Cosi Fan Tutte - Whitewater Opera
"Holmes, as Guglielmo, showed a magnetic personality and displayed a richly focused baritone." The Cincinnati Enquirer, Janelle Gelfand

St. John Passion - Taganick Chorale
"The best voices belong to (Julianne) Baird and Holmes. Both showed beauty of tone and an easy command of vocal technique. As Jesus, Holmes sang with dignity. Dialogues with the Evangelist were thoughtful, poignant exchanges." Gannett Newspapers, Francis Brancaleone
